SUMOskinny magazine is the ultimate guide to college life. Part local, part national, and all college.
As summer begins to wind down, the first and most ominous indication that you’re about to trade in your bikinis and beach balls for backpacks overpriced books, is the onset of retailers hawking back to school supplies. As you prepare for another semester in college, its important to keep in mind some positive habits to help make your semester as fun and productive as possible. Switching from the comfort a home environment leaves thousands of college students failing to cope. Here’s some tips on on making the most of it.

Escape the dungeon- We’ve all seen the “unadjusted Freshman.” The kid that just cannot seem to get their act together. Typically, they wake up 25 minutes before class(15 minutes if it’s an 8AM) roll out bed, then proceed to toss on a wrinkled shirt and cargo shorts, and fumigate the area with AXE Swagger (because who doesn’t want to smell like a locker room). On the way out, they grab some Hostest Ding Dongs, or some other sugary, onomonopia type breakfast. They scurry to class, unkempted, and mentally unprepared for a succcesful day.
Rushing through your morning in college may seem like a time saving, sleep extending practice. However, it is a habit that leads to a less enjoyable day, and does not properly prepare the mind or body for the toils of academia. Thus, taking some time to start your morning right goes a long way. The first step is to get out of your dorm room. Most dorm rooms are cold, sterile and cramped. Not even the biggest squishy chair (
or flat screen tv can change that. Thus it is imperative to not succumb to ones dreary surroundings. If you do, its easy to get stuck in a sedentary rut, where you mope from class, and back to your cave all day. Sounds like fun.
The key to avoiding this,is to be proactive by devoting some personal time away from your dorm room in the morning. This can greatly improve the quality of your day, while increasing friendships and academic performance. Unfortunately, with no one to tell you when to wake up, its all too easy to sleep in. Don’t always hit the snooze! We challenge you to set your alarm an hour early, 3 days a week. If you’re not hitting the gym, then take a quick shower, and focus on yourself for the first hour of your day. This does not mean sitting at your desk watching cat videos. Get out of your dorm room, and find your own little corner of the world. Make this place a refuge from the chaos of college. College students often flock to the same few establishments and hang outs. Often a quick drive, or bike ride off the main streets of your college town will offer up the perfect spot that’s off the beaten path. We suggest finding a coffee shop, book store, or cafe, and becoming a “regular” there. Once you have found your morning hangout, use it as a place relax, meditate, and think. Don’t study here! Let it be a safe zone from any external pressure. It’s surprisingly beneficcial to pull your self away from your enviroment, if only for a few minutes. Another great side effect is that when you frequent a place, you get to know the customers and community much better. This offers the opportunity to connect with a wider spectrum of people, and plug in to the local community. most importantly though, you have some private time to enjoy an espresso in the stillness of early morning.
