For those of you unaware of this, there is a radical Kansas based church causing a stir, this time their counter demonstrators were the ones that made the real noise.
The Westboro Baptist Church has been travelling from church to church protesting controversial subjects such as gay rights. They have also been known to claim that the congregations they protest are “false church[es]”. They have even protested at the funeral of a fallen United States service member. Some of the Westboro Baptist Church's protest have been met by friendly counter demonstrators as was the case in Everett, Washington recently.

This time in DuPont, Washington the story got a little more interesting. The protesters- on this occasion using gay rights as a platform- were met by an overwhelmingly large faction of counter demonstrators, dressed as zombies. The zombies showed up in hoards, reminiscent of a round of Nazi Zombies from Call of Duty. However the walking dead did not seek flesh, they were amicable for the most part, surely a relief to the members of the clergy. Still the thought of zombies massing by the hoards to stop a protest is pretty radical and largely unheard of.
The whole idea was started by a Facebook event. Four friends including Melissa Neace created the event “Zombie’ing Westboro Baptist Church AWAY from Fort Lewis!”. The idea proved crucial bestowing them with a creative way to peacefully meet the members of Westboro Baptist. The idea became a hit with the zombies, flocking in the hundreds. The flesh eaters were said to have outnumbered the members of the clergy 300 to 8. This surely was the deciding factor that neutralized the negative notions of the radical church members and created an underlying comic relief to lull the tensions at hand.
The idea of church members protesting gay rights, or blaspheming another church is rather radical. That is surely why stories like this headline the news daily. What is even more radical is the response that has arisen from these stories. People are finding creative and peaceful alternatives to lessen the tension brought forward by the members of the Westboro Baptist Church, this zombie apocalypse theme being the latest. These church members exemplify the lack of understanding and empathy placed in the confines of the world today, while their flesh craving counterparts show us that even the most shocking of beasts can keep the peace.
