Sorry guys, I've been MIA for the last two weeks but now I'm back and ready to do this shib. I thought about making this a big deluxe post with everything I missed, but dropped that in favor of more current and relevant movie news. Maybe I'll go back later this week and catch up on what we forgot, but only maybe. For now, let's get it on:
First Trailer For The Most Ambitious Film, Cloud Atlas
Since the Matrix trilogy, the Wachowski brothers haven't made a lot of impact. Sure, they did V For Vendetta and had a hand in Ninja Assassin, but there was also Speed Racer...so yeah. Now, they have probably the most ambitious movie of the last five years on the horizon: Cloud Atlas. Starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving and Hugh Grant, the flick has a gigantic scope that could really be a hit:
But it could also be a huge miss; seriously, this trailer is a clusterfuck of confusion. Without reading the novel, all you see are major actors in incredibly different costumes in cosmically different universes doing bizarrely different things. In short: this movie will probably flop. It might serve better as a story split into at least two or three parts to tell the entire story, a la The Hobbit. We'll see what the future holds on October 26th.
Offical Man Of Steel Teaser Hits With Showings Of Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight Rises was an amazing movie, sadly overshadowed by one of the most tragic events in modern American history. But one upcoming film received a lot of hype due to the overall success of TDKR: Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel. The guy behind Watchmen and 300 is bringing Superman back to the big screen after the shitshow that was Superman Returns. Check it out:
Yeah I know, we didn't see much beyond him soaring into the sky and pulling off a sonic boom. But what the trailer lacked in aesthetics, it made up for in theme. Returns had this super lame, happy-go-lucky sentiment to it; Snyder is injecting Watchmen into the story of Superman. This movie looks to be dark and realistic (as real as Superman can get). He's clearly taken some notes from Christopher Nolan and his massive success with revitalizing Batman. I don't know about anyone else, but I am stoked for this film. And Michael Shannon as Zod? Russell Crowe as Jor-El? I'm totally sold. Plenty of time though, due out in Summer 2013.
Trailer For Animated Batman Film The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1
Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is arguably one of the greatest graphic novels of all time. Serving as inspiration for some of The Dark Knight Rises, it tells the story of a near 60-year-old Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to once again don the cape and cowl to save Gotham. The comic is being given the animated treatment via The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1. Take a look:
One thing to say about this: MAKE 'EM SAY UHHH. For real, this is going to be fantastic. Dark Knight Returns is one of my top 3 favorite graphic novels, possibly my favorite Batman storyline as well. To see it come to life is awesome. And Peter Weller (Robocop, Dexter) as Bruce Wayne/Batman? Cannot wait. Due out on DVD/VOD on October 23rd.
Official Trailer for Skyfall Hits The Web
Oh James Bond, you dangerous sir. After Casino Royale and Quantam Of Solace, the lady-killing, world-saving MI6 secret agent is back for more in Skyfall. Forced to question his loyalties to M, Bond must protect his agency and country against an old threat from his boss' past. And he will stop at nothing to succeed.
Javier Bardem as a bad guy is just so...right. No one can appear more cold and calculating than the man who made people wet themselves as Anton Chigurh from No Country For Old Men. His line delivery can be so diabolical that it sends shivers down your spine. My best guess at his character: a former MI6 agent (or the like) betrayed by a younger M long before Bond's time. Maybe he even used to be a 00.
Either way, there's a lot going on in this trailer. The part where he jumps off the crashing train, lands, and then straightens his cuffs? Daniel Craig is James Bond in the same way that Robert Downey, Jr. is Tony Stark. Sean Connery used to always be my favorite, but Craig brings such a serious intensity and depth to the character that simply can't be ignored. And with this movie in IMAX, expect huge action scenes and pulse-racing shootouts. Skyfall drops (see what I did there?) November 9th.
