Wednesday Movie Round Up: Richard Gere, "Avatar," Josh Hamilton Biopic

Another Wednesday is here, time for the weekly round up!  Let's get right to it.

Arbitrage Trailer Released

Richard Gere used to be my dude.  The Jackal was an ill movie; Gere played the badass Irishman Declan, hunting down Bruce Willis' "Jackal."  Oh and Jack Black was in it for like three seconds before getting blown to pieces (and not in a good way).  Anywho, Gere is aiming to resuscitate his career with the new film, Arbitrage.  Starring as a billionaire CEO trying to protect himself - and his financial assets - from the repercussions of a horrible mistake involving a mistress, this flick looks pretty solid.  Gere is getting rave reviews for his performance so toss this onto your film radar, due in theaters and VOD on September 14th.

James Cameron Shooting THREE Avatar Sequels Back-To-Back-To-Back

Just in case you weren't sick of his ego and unoriginality, Sigourney Weaver dropped a nice bombshell on us this week: James Cameron is shooting not two, but three sequels to his film, Avatar.  And they're being shot all in a row, meaning you probably won't see Sam Worthington or Zoe Saldana any time soon.

As usual, everyone should treat her tidbit of information as speculation because this is Hollywood.  It makes sense for a studio to greenlight this kind of massive production; Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time. Shooting all three sequels would save time and money for Cameron and his crew, as well as forego any schedule complications for the main actors.  Since it's rumor, keep a watchful eye on any further reports here at SUMO.

Casey Affleck Set To Direct Biopic On Texas Rangers Slugger Josh Hamilton

Arguably one of the best power hitters in baseball today, Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is also a troubled soul. Marred by drug addiction after a car accident, his tumultuous career has seen him overcome adversity to become an All-Star and AL MVP. Now Casey Affleck is set to write and direct Hamilton's biography.

It's not surprising to hear this; Hamilton's story is legit something out of Hollywood. Meteoric rise, catastrophic fall, surreal combeack: the movie writes itself. The one big question is who will be picked to play Hamilton.  As much as it'd be cool to see an A-lister take on the role, I really liked Moneyball's approach of hiring little known actors to play well-known ballplayers. With no story, there's still plenty of development left, so stay with us as more details come out.

Second Teaser Trailer For The Master with Philip Seymour Hoffman

Paul Thomas Anderson's (There Will Be Blood) upcoming film The Master is shaping up to be another masterpiece from the director. Philip Seymour Hoffman (Hannibal, Capote) plays religious leader Lancaster Dodd, a character who is a pretty obvious spin-off of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Dodd founds a religion after the events of World War II and recruits the troubled Freddie Sutton (Joaquin Phoenix) to help spread the word.

As more details of the plot emerge, Anderson releases small teaser trailers the show the characters in action. These clips are perfect; eerie, haunting, insightful. We get really quick but hefty looks at the characters of Master. So far, we've got two: one for Freddie, and now one for Lancaster.  Check them out below and be on the watch for The Master, due in theaters October 12th.

That's all the big news for this week, thanks for stopping by!
