10 Tips To Pull a Successful All-Nighter

For most of us the last week of classes/finals week is either approaching or upon us. The work we have to get done is out of control, and you’re probably freaking out over how to get it all done in time.

If you are desperate enough to need to pull an all-nighter, make sure the reason for doing so is unavoidable.

Here are ten ways your all-nighter can be a successful one.

1.) Take an exercise break every hour for about five minutes. Run around, do some jumping jacks, just get your blood flowing.

2.) Keep the brightness of your computer screen low. The brightness will actually strain your eyes to make them tired.

3.) Avoid caffeine. Strange, but it’s bad for you and might even make you crash earlier. Try to get in caffeine before one in the afternoon to maximize your alertness.

4.) Eat healthy. Don’t have a large meal before an all-nighter, because being full will make you tired. Instead, snack throughout the night on protein rich foods like fruit and veggies. Not only will these foods help keep you awake, but they’re good for you too.

5.) Open the windows. The colder you are, the more likely you are to stay awake. Being too warm can make you fall asleep easier.

6.) Use self-control. Unless you need the Internet to help you find research for your paper, just shut it off. Turn off push notifications on your phone, but better yet, keep your phone at a distance so you’re not tempted to check it every few minutes anyway.

7.) Don’t work on a couch, bed or on the floor. Work as far away from a place that looks comfy to curl up for a few seconds so you’re less tempted to go to sleep entirely.

8.) Take short naps. Napping after lunchtime (between 12 and 2) is best. If you don’t have time to nap in the afternoon, take short ten-minute naps every hour or two. Yes, this kind of defeats the point of an all-nighter, but it will help you stay up longer.

9.) Set an alarm on your phone to go off every 20 minutes to avoid dozing off. Yes, this is obnoxious, but it really helps if you have trouble staying awake late at night.

10.) Prepare for the day ahead. Let’s be honest, no one ever feels their best after an all-nighter. You’re probably going to be running late in the morning, so prepare your stuff for your morning routine, your outfit and backpack so your day is a little bit easier.
