The 2012 NFL draft began last evening with no major surprises whatsoever.

Andrew Luck of Stanford and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III of Baylor went first and second, respectively, as everyone has been predicting for what seems like an eternity.
The biggest winner for the evening had to be the New England Patriots. Not only were they blessed with two first-round picks, but were able to snag Dont'a Hightower, who somehow was available when the Patriots made the 25th pick. Hightower is an absolute monster LB from Alabama who, along with 21st pick Chandler Jones of Syracuse, should provide more pressure on opposing offenses soon.

The biggest loser for the evening had to be the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks selected Bruce Irvin out of West Virginia with the 15th overall pick. I don’t know what Pete Carroll saw in him, because you may have to be insane to pass up Hightower or Melvin Ingram of South Carolina. Both Hightower and Ingram are bigger, harder-hitting LBs who dominated in college football’s most difficult conference.
All in all, ESPN NFL draft “experts” Mel Kiper and Todd McShay did a good job of predicting this year’s draft. Rounds 2 and 3 of the Draft continue tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
