That All Natural Cereal You're Eating Isn't So Natural

It seems that once again we (the consumers) are being lied to. The next time you step into your local grocery store you might be surprised to find that Kashi brand cereal has been taken off the shelves.

A 48 report that is Cereal Crimes has reported which “all natural” products contain dangerous pesticides and genetically modified ingredients. Apparently Kashi, which is owned by Kellogg’s, was guilty for containing high levels of genetically modified ingredients. High levels usually mean that at least one of the MAIN ingredients contain GMOs.

Being an English major I had to do some research to find out exactly what a GMO was. A genetically modified organism is a plant, animal or microorganism whose genetic code has been altered in a lab. The problem with messing with these genomes are that little is known about the long-term effects. However, in most cases it is found that GMOs lead to cancer.

Just like when you hear “this is all natural” from a woman and automatically become suspicious, you should treat your food products the same way. There are no restrictions for foods labeled “natural” and most of the time it is just marketers doing what they do best, lie.

The best way to avoid these products are to purchase USDA certified organic products whenever possible. But even then I’m skeptical, since I don’t really trust any department that is ran by the government. So I guess I will go start growing my own garden using organic seeds or marry a farmer.  I suggest you do the same.
