Santorum Speaks Poorly Of Gay Marriage

Rick Santorum feels that having gay parents is worse than having a father in prison. That math just doesn't make sense. Wouldn't 2 parents, regrdless of sex or orientation, be better than just one or none at all?

Psychologist Abbie Goldberg from Clark University disagrees wholeheartedly with Santorum and states "[gay parents] tend to be more motivated, and more committed than heterosexual parents." Based on the idea that gay parents choose to become fathers and mothers where as it is more common for heterosexual parents to be surprised with a pregnancy, this makes sense. On average, there is a higher level of commitment and involvement from parent to child when raised by homosexual couples.

Hardly any differences have been found in studies regarding kids' school achievement, mental health, or social functioning. Differences were discovered in the realms of open-mindedness and tolerance, and the children generally have role models in healthy relationships. New York University sociologist Judith Stacey even went as far as to say that gay men "will be the best parents on average."

Gay and lesbian couples adopt or foster kids in need more often that heterosexual couples. The Williams Institute and the Urban Institute reported that 65,000 kids were adopted into homesexual families and another 14,000 fostered between the years 2000 and 2002.

Santorum made the aforementioned statement while in my home state of New Hampshire. I hope people don't think all of us up here feel that way. Love is love and caregiving is caregiving; there is no need for the two parties involved to be treated differently. I think my parents, who are straight, did a good job with myself and my siblings and I'm sure homosexual parents are capable of doing just as great of a job.
