I took a trip to the gym this summer and had the workout of my life. Rock climbing is a total body workout. Your arms, your hands and your fingertips are all working to keep you stable. Your core is completely engaged to help you move vertically and help you reach for hand holds. Your legs and your feet are working overtime to push you up the wall and gain reach. Your brain is constantly thinking of the next best move. TOTAL. BODY. WORKOUT.
The gym has equipment available for rental. With a full retail package climbers get a harness, chalk bag, shoes and belay device and/or carabiner. You need all of these things, especially the chalk.
Don’t get discouraged if this is your first time climbing. Climbing is challenging, but there are courses at Central Rock built for all levels. Start small and work your way up the difficulty scale. Push your limits and don’t give up on a course until you try it a number of times. Another tip from my climbing experience: try to plan your course from the ground so you don’t lose momentum on your way up.
