Welcome to The Jungle- How to Survive as an Outside Fan in Boston

Arguably (for die-hard basketball fans this is a no-brainer), the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers play in the best, heated, confrontational, media-hungry rivalry in ALL of sports. Every series, whether it is James Worth, Kareem, Magic, Kevin McHale, or the infamous Larry Bird, is a breath-taking display of basketball at its finest. Recently, it has culminated into a 7 game gritting series with the Lakers eventually coming back from 13 down in the 3rd to win the Larry O’Brien trophy. As excitement overwhelmed me (I have been a die-hard Lakers fan since I was 5), I suddenly realized my present predicament; a Lakers fan in the deep in enemy territory, the bee-hive. A colony of buzzing, sometimes ferocious Celtics fans.

However, to any freshman to the Boston area or any others, do not be afraid to wear your purple and gold apparel. Sports its one of the greatest and most loved aspects of modern day society (of course my opinion is biased), and loving a sports team is like loving a great person. There are good and bad days. Days filled with emotion; tears, sometimes suffering, while others filled with feelings of an ecstatic nature. Back to my original point, representing the Lakers on this foreign soil is like representing your country during war. We have to be strong. When I come across other Laker fans, those donned in various jerseys or other apparel, it is like meeting a lost brother. There is always the hand shake or head nod; an equivalence of approval in every day society. We talk about last night’s game or transactions occurring during the off-season. Every time, it never fails.

Not just Laker fans should come out of the dark to represent your dreaded sport teams in Boston. I am talking to you New York Yankee and Philadelphia Flyer fans. Be proud of your sports allegiance and do not back down to any “band wagon”, or other nonsense that comes out of Massachusetts sports fans.  WE SHALL PESEVERE.
