College News: UNCP Boasts Dismal Graduation Rates

“UNC” is a prestigious title for a university to have. To be called the University of North Carolina at anything is an honor and comes along with high expectations for its students. The most commonly known UNC branded school is UNC Chapel Hill. But there are more branded schools that many students choose to attend. Most of them are smaller in population, but all are committed to their students excelling as a student and as a representative of the UNC brand.

Here are the schools with the UNC brand:

UNC Asheville
UNC Charlotte
UNC Greensboro
UNC Wilmington
UNC Pembroke
UNC Chapel Hill
UNC School of Arts

People choose to attend one of these schools over the others for varying reasons. But many people want to go to the school that’s in a college friendly environment, offers their major, notoriety, tradition, etc. Graduation rates are not spoken of often, but they definitely are considered when choosing the best school with a UNC brand. UNC Pembroke and UNC Asheville have to work harder and be more creative in attracting students due to their isolated locations.

Check out the schools’ four year graduation rates for years 2006-2010:

UNC Asheville -36.9%
UNC Charlotte-25.5%
UNC Greensboro-29.4%
UNC Wilmington-51.7%
UNC Pembroke-15.4%
UNC Chapel Hill-80.3%
UNC School of Arts-57.4%

UNC Pembroke’s graduation percentiles are drastically lower than the other schools’, but it is in perhaps, the worse location of all the other schools. The town of Pembroke isn’t too college-friendly either, rather more traditional in Indian heritage. Compared with the other UNC brand schools, all UNC Pembroke has to bargain with is affordability and small class size.

“I chose UNCP because the school means a lot to my mom, it’s cheap, I can have a relationship with my professors and it has “UNC” on its title, but I feel like I’m missing out on a true college experience because life is so idle in Pembroke ,” Senior Brandon Booker said.
