Bostonians are used to accepting (and winning) drinking challenges, sports challenges and food challenges. But this year Mayor Menino brings about a new challenge that, if accepted will bring about a lot of good change to this city.
Major Menino kicked off “Boston Moves For Health” on Monday, which encourages Bostonians to lose 1,000,000 pounds. Obesity is a major problem in this country and I say we should pave the way for other cities to join us in the challenge.
BostonMovesForHealth.org is where you can keep record of your weight loss goals as well as your physical activity and eating habits. The Mayor isn’t just stopping here as he stated, “To really get Boston moving I want to see us walk 10-million miles together this year, or run or bike or swim or skip, the choice is yours.”
It wouldn’t be Boston if the Red Sox weren’t getting involved as well. They plan to schedule an event at Fenway Park this summer supporting the cause while attempting to get even more people involved.
The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute studied 37,000 Massachusetts pre-schoolers and found that overall the obesity rate dropped. I think this gives even more incentive to keep it going in the right direction.
Challenge accepted Mayor. Let’s raise him 2,000,000 pounds.
