Another big win for gay and lesbian rights came today when a federal appeals court ruled the State of California's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. The controversial Prop 8 was a 2008 ballot measure that defined marriage as strictly between man and woman.
To quote the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal's ruling "Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and had no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California."
Protect Marriage, the group behind Prop 8 are planning on appealing the decision to a larger panel of the Ninth Cicruit or possibly going directly to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is expected to be divided on the issue.
