Cinco de Mayo weekend in Austin mean endless events happening around town. While they might not all be Cinco de Mayo related, there is something for everyone in this weekend's lineup.
Event number 1: Independence Brewery's First Saturday. This event is so big and so fun, Independence can only put it on once a month, the first Saturday of every month. The brewery opens their doors to the public from 1 pm to 3 pm for tours, tastings, bands, and local food vendors. The awesome Independence people will give you a wristband for free which entitles you to entry and three beer samples. You can also buy a pint glass and they will fill it up as many times as you want, just don't get sloppy, these beers are higher in alcohol than your typical light beer. Dogs are welcome as long as they're well-behaved and on a leash. Lawn chairs are welcome and encouraged so you can sip on your Austin Amber in comfort. Independence Brewery is located at 3913 Todd Lane Austin, TX 78744.
Event number 2: Downtown Cinco de Mayo Block Party. La Condesa sponsors this event to celebrate the heritage and culture of Mexico. They will shut down the entire block of West 2nd Street from Guadalupe to San Antonio. A huge variety of Mexican foods and beverages will be provided by La Condesa and Malaga. There will also be several different bands and DJs playing throughout the day. This event is Saturday, May 5 from 4 pm to 10 pm. Oh and did I mention this is free and open to all ages? Pretty awesome.
Event number 3: Old Pecan Street Festival. On the other side of downtown, you can see 6th Street during the day, shut down to host an arts and crafts festival free and open to all ages. This is the oldest and largest art festival in Central Texas. Pets are welcome, and you can walk around and check out all the vendors with really cool, handmade products, listen to some bands, and snack on fair-type food (think turkey legs and gator on a stick). If you are looking for a unique graduation or Mother's Day gift, this is the perfect place to find one. The festival takes place on Saturday May 5 and Sunday May 6, all day. Another fun fact about Pecan Street festival - it's the one time you can actually drink on 6th Street.
