Fashionable Philanthropy With Sisters On The Runway

There's nothing better than combining great style for a great cause. Founded in 2005 by three highschoolers, Elizabeth Eddy, Gabriela Graham, and Juliana Colangelo, Sisters on the Runway is a philanthrophic organization that hosts fashion shows to raise awareness and proceeds for domestic violence shelters. Here at UMass Amherst, our collegiate chapter of Sisters on the Runway is hosting their second annual Student Run Fashion Show on March 3 at the Campus Center Auditorium. UMass seniors Allisar Taremi and Candice Tong are the directors of the event, which they promise will be even bigger and better than last year's successful show.

This year's show will have lots of attractions beyond the runway. Hosted by Anna Meiler from UVC-TV, the event will feature a step and repeat on the red carpet, and mocktail and dessert bar inside the event. There will also be dance peformances from the UMass Dance Team and Dynamic Dance Motion Team, and a silent auction and raffle featuring looks from the shows. The outfits for the event came from a few student designers, a variety of different stores in the Amherst and Northampton area, as well as from the online shopping mecca, Asos.com

At the event, there will also be two speakers from Safe Passage, a domestic violence shelter for women and children in Northampton. This year, student directors Taremi and Tong hope to raise $6000 for the shelter, and are very confident that they will achieve their goal. "Last year we only had two months to plan for the event, and this year, we have had all of last semester and the beginning of this one to prepare. We've also been working more closely with Safe Passage, and trying to get the name of Sisters on the Runway out there, because most people think it is just a regular fashion show, but it's a fashion show for a great cause," said Taremi and Tong.

Tickets are on sale in the Student Union Resource Room- $10 for students, $15 for adults. The March 3 event begins at 6 pm.
