"No" No Longer Enough

For the record, this has nothing to do with political parties or where you fall on the political spectrum. I don't care if you'd utilize your gun to protect your right to have it or if you bathe only weekly to support your liberal environmental tendencies. This is not about petty partisan bitch fights.

A new Republican proposal making its way through the House is trying to redefine what constitutes as rape so they can limit federal funding for abortion. Presently there are federal laws in place that prevent government money from being used to pay for abortions. BUT these laws exempt pregnancies that resulted from rape or incest.

However, this new GOP plan is trying to redefine rape as only that which involves force. Meaning that if you were drugged by some neanderthal at a party and subsequently raped, that doesn't really actually count as rape. Ditto if you were drunk or if it was some other form of date rape. Also rape victims of any other diminished mental capacity will not be protected because apparently Republicans don't care about consent.

Sorry I guess I should not be referring to those instances as rapes. What is the proper term Republicans of the House? Unfortunate soul with bad luck? Girl with a regrettable sexual encounter? No I'm pretty sure rape survivor is right.

The proposal also takes it a step further and only grants the exemption for a pregnancy resulting from incest if you are under 18. So if you're 19 looks like you just have to suck it up.

Suddenly being a bleeding heart liberal doesn't seem so bad.

So however you fall on the abortion issue, that's not really what this is about. If people want to change abortion laws, then change those laws. Don't try and claim a rape isn't just that. I don't really care how you feel about abortion, but you'd be a pretty sadistic person to tell me that when a woman is drugged, cannot consent to having sex, but then a guy has sex with her, that that is not both wrong and rape.

Let's just say if this passes it would be a set back of epic proportions for the rights of women.
