SUMOskinny magazine is the ultimate guide to college life. Part local, part national, and all college.
SumoSkinny loves three things in the fall: spontaneously cancelled classes, the warmth of that sweater that’s been tucked away all summer, and apple cider. Hard or kid-friendly, cider is one of those things that seems to scream fall and, living in Boston, we are the lucky ones who actually get to see leaves falling while we drink our hot and spicy drink. But the other thing about the fall is the descent into those cool-weather treats (such as cider) that make our pants fit a little snugger. The compromise? Well, compromise.
Dunkin’ Donuts is hardcore advertising its apple cider this fall, but Starbucks has a tried and true favorite drink—Caramel Apple Spice. Which one do you choose, when you walk down the block and see a Dunks on one corner and that Starbucks green lady logo on the other? Lucky for you, SumoSkinny’s done your homework for you. You’re welcome.
Starbucks boasts the Caramel Apple Spice is “Steamed, freshly pressed apple juice and cinnamon syrup,” to quote to starbucks.com. A tall, without whipped cream, is 240 calories and 5 calories from fat. Dunkin’ Donuts, however, true to form, has a plain and simple drink: Hot Apple Cider. Only two ounces larger than Starbucks’ “tall” size, Dunk’s small is a mere 120 calories and zero calories from fat.
- Big drink =big pants, but delicious enough to be worth it.
Our new Apple Cider is a classic autumn treat that you'll want to hurry in for. Warm up to a cup of Hot Apple Cider or pair a crisp day with the refreshing taste of our Iced Apple Cider.
Of course, these places sell other drinks as well. We all know that sometimes you just want a straight coffee for your caffeine fix. But when you want a smooth, tasty cider, do you choose the fluffly, Starbucks-esque drink that has more fat and, presumably, more taste? Or the classic recipe that never fails from Dunkin Donuts? It’s up to you to do your homework, now, and test-taste. Tough assignment, we know.
