How to Study Like a Boss

Some people think that there is more than one “right” way to study. Maybe, but these are a few tricks to get your work done as efficiently as possible.

Step 1: Location. For me, this means going to the library and sitting where I know none of my friends will find me. Isolation is key, as any human can pose as a distraction. That’s why I also study in cemeteries when the library is crowded.

Step 2: Get off facebook (and other social media websites). If this is too difficult, visit http://visitsteve.com/made/selfcontrol/ and download “Self Control”, an app that prevents you from visiting certain sites. If this is too intimidating, I have friends who have had people change passwords on their accounts for a set period of time, and refused to tell them their new password until after their work was done.

Step 3: Stop listening to music (for a little bit). I tend to listen to music when I’m bored, and while it sometimes serves as good white noise, other times I find myself listening to the latest jams I downloaded. If your mind works to the point where you can tune out music, good for you. I just question why you’d listen to music in the first place.

Step 4: Know what you actually have to do. Make a list, write due dates on iCal (or Google Calendar if you’re lame). Don’t waste time doing unnecessary things; we’re all about efficiency. Making a list will also help to get over the mental hurdle of getting started.

Step 5: Have a reward for when you are done. Having that light at the end of the tunnel will make work time both more enjoyable and more efficient. Try planning a night out with friends for right after a term paper is due and it will make the entire process less painful. With these tips in mind, you’re now ready to take on anything your professor could throw at you.

Go get ‘em, tiger!
