How to Deal With a Terrible Professor

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Can we PLEASE stay on at least ONE slide for more than three seconds so I can actually write the information down?!"

This is a common frustration among college students (at UNH at least). Yes, just like every other college, we have our fair share of crappy professors with lazy teaching techniques. Here are a few peeves UNH students have with their professors and how they deal with them.

Going through material too freakin' fast:

“I can't stand it when professors hastily scrawl notes on the board, and hardly do a good job explaining questions. I guess what gets me most is when professors blaze through the material and don't slow down to let it sink in.” -Jimmy Popovitch, Junior

*HOW TO DEAL: Get a good study group going with some friends or classmates. Working with others is a great way to solve problems because you have the ability to bounce ideas off each other. Plus, it's way more fun to study with your buds than sitting in the library by yourself (and it's less likely that you'll fall asleep on your notes!).

Inflexible teaching style:

“Teachers who don't teach their curriculum so it applies to a variety of student's learning styles bug me.” -Jordan Ciaraldi, Senior

*HOW TO DEAL: Everyone's learning style is different. Some people learn by seeing, others learn by listening, and some learn by doing. Regardless of your learning style, most people learn by memorable examples. Ask your professor to explain the material in a different a way. Ask them if they can give you an example that students can relate to. Chances are good that you aren't the only one who is struggling.

Deducting points without giving a reason:

“Professors (or TA's) who take off points [from exams, quizzes, etc.] and don't tell you why.”

-Danielle Haddad, Graduate Student

*HOW TO DEAL: Even though it's a pain sometimes, go to office hours! This gives you a chance to have a one to one conversation with your professor or TA and ask them to explain what you did wrong. It also gives you bonus points because if they see that you are making the extra effort to do well in the class, they might give you some slack at the end of the semester.

Zipping through slides:

Going through the slides too fast is one of my biggest peeves with professors, personally. Why both taking the time to make the friggin' slide if you can't wait 30 more seconds so people can write down the information!?

*HOW TO DEAL: Speak up! It's highly likely that everyone else in the class is thinking the same thing, "Is this professor for real?" Kindly ask the professor is he/she can go back to the previous slide or repeat what was said. This will make you the class hero while informing the professor to keep a slower pace throughout the semester. Also, it is a good habit to learn to only write down the key points on each slide. Or if your professor posts the slides, print the slides out so you can follow along and not have to rush to write everything down.
