I love Adele. I’m not kidding, not even the slightest bit. I have a serious, full-blown crush on the talented British singer/songwriter. So clearly it pissed me off big time when I heard Adele’s ex-boyfriend is claiming royalties to the success of her first album, “19.” Her ex feels he inspired her debut album, released in 2008, thus giving him rights to the money she made from it.

I’m nowhere close to being on Adele’s level of fabulosity, but one thing we have in common is writing. While she pens her lyrics, I enjoy dabbling in short stories and the occasional ill-written poem. If there’s one thing I have come to learn about writing, it’s that drawing from personal pain and raw experiences create the most satisfying end product. Not only is this because writing serves as a form of therapy for some people, but also because the emotions are as real as they come. It’s safe to say that most performers and writers alike channel their romantic successes and failures. What Adele’s ex-boyfriend doesn’t understand is that you don’t owe any of your profit to the inspiration you draw from, especially if they’re an awful ex.
